Our Lunches

The Bozeman Public School District makes lunches available to all students attending schools in the district. The food service program is self-supporting through federal funds under authority of the National School Lunch Act and the Child Nutrition Act, and through minimum fees charged to participants.

Free lunches are available to children from low income families. A reduced price lunch is also available to children from families of limited means. Any child in grades 4-12 may earn a free lunch by helping to serve lunch for approximately 20 minutes a day. Workers perform a variety of tasks such as serving and washing tables. Interested students should contact the secretary at their school for more information.

At the beginning for the school year the district sends a letter to each family explaning the school lunch program along with applications for free or reduced price lunches.

School district employees prepare nutritious lunches at the central district kitchen and at the high school. Prepared meals are delivered to all elementary schools and cooked fresh on site. Each elementary student can choose their own lunch combination from a variety of entrees, fresh and prepared fruits and vegetables, milk & a roll. In addition, a variety of extra foods are available daily at the middle and high schools. These items may be purchased in a limited number of combinations for the standard lunch price or individually to supplement a cold lunch brought from home or to add to the standard school lunch. All of these foods are economically priced and offer a welcome alternative to a sack lunch.

Under the leadership of Mr. Burrows and Sherri Pearson, Registered Dietitian, and in coordination with school administration, school staff and parents, four local Elementary Schools have received prestigious HealthierUS School Challenge Awards from USDA. Hawthorne, Whittier and Morning Star Elementary Schools received the Gold award while, Longfellow Elementary is the recipient of the HealthierUS School Challenge Bronze award. This national award recognizes elementary schools for their exemplary efforts in serving healthful school meals, providing nutrition education and opportunities for children to be physically active.

The same lunch menu is served district-wide in all of our elementary, middle schools and high school, thereby allowing all students the same opportunity to enjoy healthy, colorful and fresh school meals. The HealthierUS School Challenge program raises Bozeman school districts lunches above the minimum level of the National School Lunch Program to include an increased variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, a whole grain item offered daily, low-fat and fat free milk products and a low-fat entrée option daily.
